VSCA advocates to clarify the role school counselors in Volusia County Schools while ensuring students have access to a comprehensive developmental school counseling program.

ADVOCACY TOPICS

Student Failure Prevention Act - VSCA supports FSCA's the Student Failure Prevention Act  which would mandate an overall district ratio of 1:350 and provide boundaries for school counselor assignments to make the most effective use of their highly specialized training and services. Companion legislation has been filed in Florida’s Senate and House in 2013 (SB 154 and HB 801).

Expansion of School Counseling Resources - SB 902 filed by Senator Detert.  The bill seeks the expansion of School Counseling Resources by establishing a Blue Ribbon Panel Task Force within the Department of Education to study the impact on students of increasing the number of school counselors in public schools, and to review and recommend revisions to Florida's School Counseling and Guidance Framework.
